For three consecutive years, (1996-1999) Joe won the Vermont All-State Music Festival Scholarship in the Jazz category, and also won the All-State Jazz Composition Scholarship in 1999 for a big band piece which he composed and arranged. He was later commissioned by the same organization to compose and arrange a piece for the jazz band, which was performed at the festival's 75th anniversary concert in 2002.
Joe was accepted into the highly-acclaimed National All-Star Grammy Jazz Big Band in 1999 under the direction of Justin DeCioccio. He played for Grammy nominees in private functions in Los Angeles as well as at jazz clubs such as Catalina's in Hollywood. The band released an album on the Capitol Records label which was recorded at Oceanway Studios in Hollywood.
In 1999, while still in high school, Joe released his debut trio CD, For The Birds, which won rave reviews in Vermont media. His second album, JD3: Live, captures an exciting evening of trio jazz recorded in August, 2001 at the FlynnSpace in Burlington, VT. Both CD's are available on the Sonic Mirage label.
